Growing Your Own Food Starts Here!
Soil & Composting
Healthy soil is the foundation of any garden. One of the easiest ways to improve your soil is through composting.
We use simple kitchen scraps and yard waste to build rich, living soil that helps our plants thrive. It’s one of the simplest ways we’ve found to start growing better food at home.
If you’re new to composting, this guide from Nashville.gov breaks it down in a simple, beginner-friendly way and is a great place to start.

Getting Started
Starting a garden doesn’t have to be complicated. We’ve learned that it’s better to start simple and grow from there.
Whether you’re planting in the ground, raised beds, or containers, the most important things are sunlight, good soil, and consistency.
Here in Tennessee (Zone 7b), timing also matters. Some crops love the cooler months, while others need heat to thrive.
If you’re just getting started, focus on a few easy crops, learn as you go, and don’t be afraid to make mistakes. That’s all a part of the process!
Tip: Start with what you actually eat. It makes the process more rewarding and practical.
Grow for Health
Growing your own food is about more than just gardening -- it’s about taking control of what you’re putting into your body.
Many herbs and vegetables have natural benefits that can support your health, and when you grow them yourself, you know exactly how they were grown.
We’ve been learning more about medicinal herbs and how simple plants can be used in everyday life, from teas to natural remedies.
It doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Start with a few herbs, learn what they’re used for, and build from there.

Harvest & Storage
Knowing when and how to harvest your food is just as important as growing it. Harvesting at the right time helps your food taste better and last longer.
Once your crops are ready, proper storage makes a big difference. Some vegetables can be stored fresh, while others can be preserved for later use.
We’re learning different ways to make our harvest last longer -- from simple storage methods to freezing and saving seeds for the next season.
The goal is to make the most of what you grow and reduce waste.
A good harvest doesn’t end in the garden. It continues in how you store and use what you’ve grown.
